I wanted to give my mother a beautiful watercolour portrait painting of herself for Mother’s Day. She is 90 years old.
However, my first attempt was so dire that it will never see the light of day. I strained and squinted, pushed and peered, reworked, revised, revamped, and re-everything! But it was just awful.
Having run out of time, I then did a quick ten minute study, using a photo of her. And ‘lo! I am happy with the result.
Moral of the story? Simplicity is best. Don’t overthink it. Don’t strain for effect or excellence. Just do what you can do.
